The Yellowstone River earned the designation of a blue-ribbon trout stream. Anglers can test their skills against the wily trout. Fishing guides, familiar with every bend of the river, will show you their hot spots. The Chamber of Commerce Is a good source for information on guides. Another source is the Fishing Outfitters Association of Montana (FOAM); (406) 763-5436. White-water rafting or kayaks await the adventuresome. The scenery is awesome for those who can keep their eyes open. Local outfits offer trips down the Yellowstone; motorized boats are not allowed. A variety of Yellowtone snowmobile trails begin at Gardiner. Rentals are available in Gardiner. The Gardiner Ranger District, Gallatin National Forest, has maps. Write Box 5, Gardiner, MT 59030 Every fall, big-game hunters are welcomed to Gardiner. Skilled outfitters offer guided hunts through some of Montana's best big-game territory. Contact the Chamber of Commerce for outfitter information. The Gardiner Rodeo takes place in mid-June. Specific dates for each year may be obtained through the Chamber of Commerce; (406) 848-7971. Gardiner celebrates the end of each summer season with its Buffalo Days Parade and Celebration. The town party, complete with dancing in the streets and a western barbecue, is held on Labor Day weekend. Proceeds from the event help fund the volunteer Gardiner Ambulance Service. Gardiner boasts about the quality of wildlife viewing around the town. Antelope often can be seen on the slopes and open meadow across from Park Street, and bears occasionally wander into town. Winter brings out the best viewing opportunities as animals move down from the higher elevations to winter feeding grounds. Look for them from Gardiner to Corwin Springs and throughout the valley. See antelope especially in October; and bighorn sheep, mule deer and elk, from November through January. Watch eagles soar above the Yellowstone River. Every weekend in winter, ranger-naturalists lead camera safaris on tours through the winter range of the park's northern big-game herds.
